Ones/Twos

Happy in Our Skin by Fran Manushkin

Is there anything more splendid than a baby’s skin? Cocoa-brown, cinnamon, peaches and cream. Text and illustrations paint a breezy and irresistible picture of the human family—and how wonderful it is to be just who you are.

Developmental markers: https://startingwithstories.org/ones-twos/.

  • Ones and twos are curious about the physical characteristics of self and others (skin color, hair texture, gender anatomy). May “match” people based on physical characteristics.

Activities:

  • Notice skin! From freckles and dimples to scratches and itches.
  • Play I Never Forget a Face: A Memory and Matching Game, and discuss the similarities and differences you see as you play. At first, your child may only like to look at the faces but will develop more sophisticated matching skills as they grow.
