Who Am I?: Race Awareness Game
Remember playing that old board game Guess Who? Lots of fun, but the cast of characters was all white. Now there is a game app for your phone called Who Am I?
Its cast includes people from many races and ethnicities, plus helpful background information. Recommended by Common Sense Media, a gateway for parents to find all types of media appropriate for your child. https://www.commonsensemedia.org/app-reviews/who-am-i-race-awareness-game
Preview of good things to come….
EmbraceRace “was founded in early 2016 by two parents who set out to create the community and gather the resources they needed (need) to meet the challenges faced by those raising children in a world where race matters.” This national organization has been an inspiration for our work at Starting with Stories. EmbraceRace is in the beginning stages of creating an exciting new resource called Reading Race in Picture Books. It will include a free online video-based guide with demos to help parents and caregivers of all races of young children to use books as lead-ins to meaningful conversations about race and diversity. Their plan was presented at the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s 2023 Saul Zaenz Early Education Innovation Challenge and was given one of the top awards. We are honored that EmbraceRace has asked Starting with Stories to partner with them on piloting the video tool kit with our families when it is ready to test in the near future. Watch for updates!
