Our mission is to encourage, equip, and support families with young children to rethink how they discuss race and diversity. We can help you…
Encourage
Parenting is an amazing, yet daunting experience. It is common to feel discouraged when attempting to navigate discussions of race, and diversity. How can I explain racism to a child when I have so many questions myself?
Starting with Stories helps families begin to form answers to these tough questions.
Equip
Racial bias starts early. When and how, do we begin conversations about race? Avoiding these conversations sends a message that children can’t come to us with questions. Parents need tools to start these conversations, to become part of a solution in our homes and communities.
Starting with Stories equips parents with a program featuring diverse children’s books, and developmental guidelines to help start and strengthen these conversations.
Support
Learning is a lifelong journey. As we learn about social justice and advocate for change in the spaces where we live, work, and play, we need support. It helps to connect with concerned families who are also navigating these conversations as we add our weight to the momentum for change.
The Starting with Stories community will support participating families as they learn from educators, racial justice advocates, and each other.
Starting with Stories provides:
- Recommendations for age-appropriate books featuring diverse characters
- Access to guides, programs, and resources to support family discussions
- Resources for adult learning
